Didim’de yaşayan çoğunluğu İngiliz olan yabancıların talebi üzerine, Didim Belediyesi tarafından restorasyonu tamamlanarak hizmete açılan tarihi kilise‘de her pazar ibadetlerini ve sohbet toplantılarını bu tarihi klişede gerçekleştiren iki ayrı grup var. Genellikle sabah 11 ile 14 arası Maurice Ryan grubu ibadet ederken saat 14:00 ve 17:00 arası da Tony Scott grubu ibadetlerini gerçekleştiriyor.
Yaklaşık 8 yıldır Didim‘de yaşayan İngiliz uyruklu Tony Scott ve yine uzun yıllardır Didim’de yaşayan Maurice Ryan öncülüğünde tarihi klişede ibadetlerini yapıyorlar. Reverend Maurice Ryan / Didim Town Of Peace & Brotherhood
After restoration of the historical church near the Apollon Temple, Didim Belediye opened it for Sunday service at the request of a large part of Didim’s foreign population. The Sunday service is shared by Maurice Ryan and Tony Scott, who serve gatherings at the church for the Sunday sermon and spiritual talks. Resident of 8 years Ryan runs his sermon from 11 am to 2 pm, after which long time resident Scott takes over from 2 pm to 5 pm. We wanted to take the opportunity and get to know a little bit more about Rev Ryan than what is stated on his business card – Rev. Maurice Ryan / St. Mary’s & Ecumenical Christian Fellowship; Didim – and through what turned out to be a very pleasant conversation, also introduce this long time resident to you.
- Who is Rev. Ryan and how long have you been living in Didim? We know of you as ‘the English Rev. Maurice, but do you have any other profession or specialities? How would be best introduce you? / Ryan kimdir ve kaç yıldır Didim’de yaşıyor? Sizi İngiliz papaz olarak tanıyoruz ama başka bir mesleğiniz ya da özellikleriniz var mıdır? Sizi nasıl tanıtalım?
Ben İngiltere’nin Piskoposluk Kilisesi olan St Mary Anglikan ve Evrensel Hristiyan Cemiyeti’ne bağlı başpiskopos tarafından Ege’nin kıyı yerleşimi olan Didim’de yetkilendirilmiş kiliselerin tümünü temsil eden bir papazım. Türkiye ile bağlantım Oxford Üniversitesi’nde Yunan ve Latin Edebiyatı ve Yeni Ahit Teolojileri bölümü öğrencisi olduğum zamana yani 1965 yıllarına dayanmaktadır. Yaz tatilinde sırt çantalarımızla iki arkadaşımla birlikte Meryem Ana Kilisesi ve Çanakkale ve antik kent Truva‘yı gezmek için Samos’tan Kuşadası’na geçtik. Tam kırk yıl sonra 2005 yılında eşim ve ben artık iki çocuğumuzun da büyümesi ile Altınkum’da bir ev satın aldık ve ilerleyen yıllarda yaşamımızı burada sürdürmeye devam ettik.
Üniversitenin Cardiffteki Wales Bilim ve Teknoloji Enstitüsünde ileri çalışmalar başlamadan birkaç sene önce İngilizce ve Klasikler öğretilir, ben Oxford’dan mezun olduktan sonraki beş yılımı öğretim üyesi olarak İngilizce Bilimi için harcadım. Bu ileri düzey İngilizce bilenlerin dili profesyonel kullanıp kullanmadıklarına ilişkin testleri içermektedir. Büyük Britanya’da okuyan ve deniz aşırı ülkelerden gelen öğrenciler için kurgusal olmayan el kitabı yazdım. Bugünlerde ise ilk romanımı yayınlamaya çalışıyorum.
I am an ecumenical chaplain, and am licensed by the Bishop of the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe to be the priest in charge of St Mary’s Anglican and Ecumenical Christian Fellowship,in Didim on the Aegean coast of Turkey. My relationship with Turkey goes back to 1965 when I was studying Greek and Latin Literature and New Testament Theology at Oxford University. During the summer vacation, I backpacked through Greece with two other students and disembarked from Samos at Kusadasi in order to visit St Mary’s House at Ephesus as well as Canakkale and ancient Troy. Forty years later, in 2005, when our two children had already grown up, my wife and I bought a house in Altinkum and came to live there the following year.
After graduating from Oxford, I had taught English and Classics for a few years before beginning further studies at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in Cardiff where I spent five years learning to become a lecturer in English for Science. This included obtaining a Master’s in Testing English for Specific Purposes. Later, I wrote a non-fiction Handbook for overseas students studying in Great Britain. Currently I am trying to publish my first novel.
- Every Sunday, a group of worshippers comes to the chapel and this group is ever growing and changing. Numbers grow larger each week. Can you tell me more about your group? / Her pazar sizin önderliğinizde tarihi klise Şapel’de ibadet eden sayıları sürekli değişen bir grup var. Böyle bir grubun oluşması sürecini ya da yaşadığınız bu sürecini anlatır mısınız?
Şu anda kiliseye gelerek ibadet eden üç grup var. İlk grup Didim‘de yaşayan emekliler. Her Noel, Paskalya ve her Pazar kiliseye gelen Hristiyan gurbetçilerden oluşuyorlar. İkinci grup, yerel mülk sahibi ve her yaz düzenli olarak Didim veya Altınkum gelen gurbetçiler. Üçüncü grup ise Efes, Asya ve Meryem Ana, Yedi Kiliseler, Miletos, Apollon gibi tur programları içerisinde olan ve ziyaret amaçlı dünyanın her yerinden gelen Hıristiyanlardan oluşuyor. Feribotla Patmos Adasından Didim D-Marine’e de yat ile gelen misafirlerimiz de oluyor.
There are really three groups of worshippers that are coming to the chapel at present. The first group consists of Christian expatriates who have retired to Didim and come to church every Sunday, including each Christmas and Easter. The second group is made up of expats who own property locally and come to Didim or Altinkum regularly each summer. A third group consists of Christians from all over the world who come to this part of Turkey to visit the Seven Churches of Asia and St Mary’s House at Ephesus, only an hour and a half’s journey by bus, as well as ancient Miletus, a few kilometres away where St Paul spoke to the elders of Ephesus. Some of our visitors are also on their way to the Island of Patmos a few hours journey by ferry where St John the Evangelist was imprisoned by the Romans and wrote the Book of the Apocalypse. Other worshippers have also arrived by yacht at Didim Marina nearby.
- Can you tell us about where or how you held your Sunday services before you could make use of the restored chapel? Tarihi Kliseden önce nerede ve nasıl ibadet ediyor dunuz? Daha önce hiç camii ve cem evi gibi ibadet yerlerini gezip inceleme fırsatınız oldu mu mesela hiç Müslüman Din adamları ile sohbet etme fırsatınız oldu mu?
Biz buraya 2006 yılında yerleştik ve 2006 yılından bu yana ilk kez Belediye Başkanı Sayın Deniz Atabay tarafından 25 Ekim 2015 Pazar günü eski bir Rum Şapeli olan bu yapı ibadet amacıyla kullanmak üzere hizmete açıldı. Bundan önce şapelin restorasyonu tamamlanana kadar yerel polisten izin almak koşulu ile dört yıl boyunca Pazar günleri ibadetlerimizi Didim ve Altınkum’daki Cemevi’nin bize tahsis ettiği odada gerçekleştirdik. Bize bu imkânı sağlayan Alevilere bu nedenle büyük saygı ve sevgimiz vardır. Henüz, herhangi bir Müslüman din adamı ile tanışma fırsatımız olmadı ama gelecekte bunun gerçekleşmesi için sabırsızlanıyoruz.
Before the present Mayor, Mr Deniz Atabay, permitted us to use the old Greek chapel for the first time on Sunday October 25th, 2015, when we first settled here in 2006, we used to obtain permission from the local police to holdach Sunday and services in different house groups in Didim and Altinkum. Eventually, however, we made friends with the local Cem Evi community. They allowed us to use their Prayer Room every Sunday for our 11am Holy Communion Service for nearly four years until we eventually moved to the restored Greek chapel. Our community has great respect and affection for the Alevis. As yet, we have not had the opportunity to meet with any Muslim clerics but we look forward to this possibility in the future.
What were your thoughts about starting Christian services in a predominantly Muslim country like Turkey? Did you have any reservations about cooperation, or were you enthusiastic from the start? Türkiye gibi bir çoğunluğu Müslüman bir ülkede Hıristiyan hizmetlerini başlatma hakkında düşünceleriniz nelerdir? Eğer işbirliği konusunda herhangi bir çekinceleri var, ya da baştan hevesli mi?
We were enthusiastic and optimistic since we were aware that Muslims living in the United Kingdom which is traditionally a Christian country, had always been offered freedom to worship and to have their own mosques. Also my wife and I had spent more than twenty years teaching English as a Foreign Language in predominantly Muslim countries such as Brunei in South East Asia, as well as Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East. As a result, we had made many Muslim friends and yet enjoyed freedom to worship, and practise our own religion.
Biz Birleşik Krallık ‘ta geleneksel bir Hıristiyan ülkesiyiz. Ülkemizde yaşayan Müslümanlara her zaman özgürce ibadet etmek ve kendi camilerini yapmak için teklifler sunulmuştur. Bu konunun farkındayız ve hoşgörülüyüz. Ayrıca eşim ve ben Güney Doğu Asya’da Bruney’in yanı sıra Kuveyt, Umman ve Ortadoğu’da Birleşik Arap Emirlikleri gibi Müslüman ülkelerde yirmi yıldan fazla yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğrettik. Sonuç olarak, birçok Müslüman arkadaşlar edindim ve henüz o bölgelerde henüz ibadet özgürlüğü sadece kendi dinlerine yönelik.
Finally, Didim is known historically as a town of peace and brotherhood, and it seems that even nowadays this is still the case with a foreign Christian group having their own Sunday services and prayers. Are local Turks/Muslims curious about the reaction you’re getting from local people and wanting to join? Didim tarihler boyu barış ve kardeşlik şehri olmuştur diyoruz, sizlerin de Didim’de her pazar özgürce ibadet edebiliyor olmanız bu durumu bugün bile doğruluyor. Türkler ve Müslümanlardan ibadetlerinizi merak ederek katılanlar oluyor mu? Genel olarak tepkiler nasıl?
Eşim ve ben, burada yıllar boyunca mutlu yaşadık. Günümüzde insanları etkileyen iniş ve çıkışlı durumlar olabiliyor. Ve insanların günlük yaşamın sorunlarına tamamen alışık olmasını bekleyebilirsiniz. Şimdiye kadar, hiçbir yerel Türk ya da Müslüman henüz bizim kilise topluluğuna katılmak istemedi, ancak bunun yerine bize her zaman sıcaklık, konukseverlik, dostluk, iyilik, hoşgörü ve keyifli sayılabilecek bir sürü mutluluk dolu değerli anlar verdiler.
For my wife and I,during the happy years we have lived here, Didim has indeed lived up to its reputation. No one on this earth can expect to be entirely immune from the ups and downs and hassles of everyday life which to some extent affect people everywhere nowadays. As yet, no local Turk or Muslim has yet requested to join our church community, but we have never expected them to do that. What they have given to us instead is warmth, hospitality, friendship, kindness, tolerance and a lot of enjoyment and happiness which we shall always value and remember.
